Team CodeRangers Crowned Champions at HackForce’25 with “UniConnect” Innovation
The team CodeRangers impressed the judges with their project UniConnect and secured 1st place, becoming the champions of HackForce’25.
UniConnect is a smart academic management system that brings together all essential academic information—such as course details, timetables, assignment deadlines, and exam schedules—into a single platform. It also allows students to easily book appointments with lecturers, improving communication and saving time for both students and staff.

Team Why Not Us Secures First Runner-Up at Codestorm AI – YGC Innovation Festival 2025
Ms. Varsha Jeyarajalingam (2021/CSC/080), Mr. Tharmaraj Thayatharsan (2020/CSC/059), and Mr. Sanjay Kirupaharan (2022/CSC/066) showcased their AI expertise at Codestorm AI, a competition held as part of the YGC Innovation Festival 2025, organised by the Yarl IT Hub on 30th August 2025.
The team delivered an outstanding performance and was awarded the First Runner-Up position, receiving a cash prize of LKR 30,000 in recognition of their achievement.
Team Thamizhi Wins Best Tamil Language Model at ICIIT Conclave 2025
Ms. Varsha Jeyarajalingam (2021/CSC/080), Mr. Tharmaraj Thayatharsan (2020/CSC/059), and Mr. Sanjay Kirupaharan (2022/CSC/066), under the supervision of Dr. K. Sarveswaran, represented the University of Jaffna at the “Small Models, Big Impact” ICIIT Conclave 2025. The event was organised by the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT Campus) on 5th August 2025.
Their team, Thamizhi, was recognised with the Best Tamil Language Model award in Shared Task 3.0: Building Compact Sinhala & Tamil LLMs. The task focused on developing compact, high-performing language models capable of running efficiently on devices and edge environments, thereby making advanced AI both accessible and locally relevant.
Team Data Dynamites Secures First Runner-Up at UoJ Coders v4.0
Three of our Level 3 students showcased their coding excellence at UoJ Coders v4.0, the annual 12-hour coding challenge organized by the Computer Society (CompSoc) in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, University of Jaffna. The event was held on 23rd August 2025 at DCS, University of Jaffna, with a record number of teams participating.
The team Data Dynamites delivered an impressive performance and emerged as the First Runner-Up, winning a cash prize of LKR 30,000.

SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards 2025: Best innovative project - University Category
The research project titled “A Deep Learning-Based Automated Tool for Ki-67 Quantification in Breast Cancer Histopathology: A Sri Lankan Context”, conducted by Mr. Nimantha Rathnayake, a Level-3S student of the Department of Computer Science, under the academic supervision of Prof. A. Ramanan, co-supervision of Dr. T. Kokul, and medical supervision of Dr. Prathibha Nellihela, co-supervision of Dr. (Mrs.) Jayanjana Asanthi, and Dr. Vathsal Bandaranayake of the Teaching Hospital, Anuradhapura, has been awarded “Best Innovative Project – University Category” at the provincial level of the Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM) National Ingenuity Awards 2025.
The award was presented to Mr. Nimantha Rathnayake at the Grand Awards Ceremony organised by SLASSCOM on the 1st of July 2025 at the Taj Samudra, Colombo.
Team Tech Triathlon Reaches Finals at Rootcode 2024
Our student team participated with distinction in the Tech Triathlon, organised by Rootcode from July 26 to October 5, 2024. Focused on the theme “Tourism in Sri Lanka,” the competition challenged participants to develop innovative digital solutions to enhance tourist attractions and address key issues in Sri Lanka’s tourism management.
Competing against over 1,180 participants across 180+ teams, our student team was selected as one of the eight finalists, showcasing creativity, technical skill, and dedication.

IdeationX Shines at FuelAsia 2023 Healthcare Innovation Programme
Our student team IdeationX has achieved remarkable success at FuelAsia 2023, APAC’s largest university healthcare innovation programme launched by Futurize. Competing against 65 teams from 8 countries, IdeationX secured a place among the Top 5 teams.

Yarl IT Hub Innovation Festival 2023
Three of our Level 3 students competed in the CodeStorm coding challenge, part of the Yarl IT Hub Innovation Festival 2023, held on November 4, 2023. They achieved Second Runner Up and were awarded a cash prize of LKR 10,000.00.

Seeds for the Future - 2023
Ms. T. Thanushika, a participant from Level 3S, was competitively chosen for a week-long programme in China known as “Seeds for the Future.” This opportunity allowed her to experience a fascinating fusion of technological advancements and the vibrant Chinese culture. During her visit, Ms. Thanushika had the privilege of exploring the Huawei Cyber Security Center situated in Shenzen, gaining insights into the technological landscape and witnessing China’s remarkable technological advancements. Additionally, she immersed herself in the cultural richness of the Splendid China Folk Culture Village and traveled to Shanghai to take part in the “Seeds Summit” event. The entire trip to China from September 14th to 22th, 2023, including airfare and accommodation expenses, was generously sponsored by Huawei.

The final year research project, “A self-training convolutional neural network for the classification of surface defects in computer integrated manufacturing”, conducted by Ms. Mayuravaani Mathuranathanan, a Level-4S student of the Department of Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. M. Siyamalan has been awarded as a “Best innovative project – University category” at the Provincial Level of the “Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM) National Ingenuity Awards 2021”. This award has been conferred to Ms. Mayuravaani at the awards night organized by the SLASSCOM on 30th April 2021 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo.

Our students’ team have participated in the Start-up weekend: Women’s edition organized by the Techstar which was held from 8th to 10th of February 2019 in the auditorium of Dialog Axiata, Colombo. The group consisting Ms. Divya, Ms. Vetharshana, Ms. Ranjithamalar, and two other members of other HEIs became the 1st Runner Up. Congratulations to the team!

Our Student Won a Chance to Join an Educational Tour to China: Seeds for the future-2017
Mr. A. Thushanthan from Level 4S got selected on competitive basis for the two-weeks programme in China referred to as “Seeds for the future”. Mr. Thushanthan got an opportunity to study the cutting-edge technologies such as LTE and cloud computing, and hands on practice in Huawei Headquarter’s most advanced labs in Shenzhen, China. In addition, he got a chance to go on a trip to experience the Chinese traditional culture. Huawei fully sponsored his flight tickets, accommodation cost to China during November 2017.

A team comprising Two Fourth year Students and Two Third years students from the Department of Computer Science have participated at the Final Round of the Inter-university Enterprise Mobility Software Development Competition-2011 organized by Motorola Inc., and the SLASSCOM. Earlier in May, 2011 these students have submitted their proposal for an enterprise mobility software entitled “On the Spot Accident Report System (OSARS)”. Out of the 48 proposals submitted by students from the National Universities and Affiliated colleges in Sri Lanka, 16 proposals including the OSARS” have been selected for the final competition.
The final competition was held on the 06th October, 2011 at the V K Samaranayake Auditorium, UCSC, University of Colombo and the software developed by our student team has won the Second Runner-Up place. The panel of judges for this competition included experts from the industry, technical specialists and academia.

Final year Special Degree Students receive the BT-Virtusa Scholarship, 2011
Eight special degree students of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Jaffna won the BT-Virtusa scholarship – 2011.
The Virtusa, which is one of the leading IT company in Sri Lanka has awarded scholarships to our special degree students. Ten of our students competed with students of other Universities in Sri Lanka for this scholarship. All the candidates for this scholarship had an aptitude test and a face-to-face interview at the Virtusa Corporation in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Madu Ratnayake, (General Manager of the Virtusa Corporation, Sri Lanka) has commented as follows about our students’ performance in his letter written to the Jaffna University:
“We were impressed with the quality of the students and it was indeed difficult to narrow down the final bursary awardees. Starting from your shortlisted candidates, we followed a rigorous interview process to select the deserving candidates.”

The scholarship includes a monthly allowance, a laptop, course text books, English language training programme, and a three month work experience in the UK working British Telecom.
This is a milestone in strengthening the relationship with the IT Industry. This award is attained as a continuation of the two-day industrial visit made in November, 2010 which was organised by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Jaffna.
