Our Special Degree Student Team has won the Second Runner-up, 2011

A team comprising Two Fourth year Students and Two Third years students from the Department of Computer Science have participated at the Final Round of the Inter-university Enterprise Mobility Software Development Competition-2011 organized by Motorola Inc., and the SLASSCOM. Earlier in May, 2011 these students have submitted their proposal for an enterprise mobility software entitled “On the Spot Accident Report System (OSARS)”. Out of the 48 proposals submitted by students from the National Universities and Affiliated colleges in Sri Lanka, 16 proposals including the OSARS” have been selected for the final competition.

The final competition was held on the 06th October, 2011 at the V K Samaranayake Auditorium, UCSC, University of Colombo and the software developed by our student team has won the Second Runner-Up place. The panel of judges for this competition included experts from the industry, technical specialists and academia.

Final year Special Degree Students receive the BT-Virtusa Scholarship, 2011

Eight special degree students of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Jaffna won the BT-Virtusa scholarship – 2011.

The Virtusa, which is one of the leading IT company in Sri Lanka has awarded scholarships to our special degree students. Ten of our students competed with students of other Universities in Sri Lanka for this scholarship. All the candidates for this scholarship had an aptitude test and a face-to-face interview at the Virtusa Corporation in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Madu Ratnayake, (General Manager of the Virtusa Corporation, Sri Lanka) has commented as follows about our students’ performance in his letter written to the Jaffna University:

“We were impressed with the quality of the students and it was indeed difficult to narrow down the final bursary awardees. Starting from your shortlisted candidates, we followed a rigorous interview process to select the deserving candidates.”

The scholarship includes a monthly allowance, a laptop, course text books, English language training programme, and a three month work experience in the UK working British Telecom.

This is a milestone in strengthening the relationship with the IT Industry. This award is attained as a continuation of the two-day industrial visit made in November, 2010 which was organised by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Jaffna.
